Access Services

Where is access services?

In the Ellender library, go to the second floor. From the stairs, turn right and then left. From the elevators turn left. 

What is access services?

Access services contains the circulation, reserves and reference collection of books and movies. It is also the home of the reference librarian, the access librarian, and interlibrary loans. This is where you check out books, study, or print/copy any assignments for your classes. 

What do I need to check out materials?

Your Colonel Card (faculty/staff/student) or a LOUIS card (community member)

How many books can I check out?

20 at one time.

How long can I check out a book?

3 weeks.

How long can I check out a DVD?

Movies are available for 3-day checkouts

How do I renew my books?

There are two ways to renew your materials

  • Go to the circulation desk on the 2nd floor
  • Online

Where can I return my books?

Books can be returned at the second floor circulation desk or in one of two book drops (outside the library or in the library lobby on the first floor)

What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan (aka illiad) makes it possible for us to borrow books that we do not carry from other libraries. This is particularly helpful on unusual topics or older articles. 

How can I request a book/article?

By setting up an interlibrary loan account (it's free!) and requesting the book via this link. 

How long does it take to receive a book/article?

Sometimes it can take as long as two weeks, so if you need a book or an article ILL'd, ask us early!

What are reserves?

Reserves are textbooks, DVDs, and/or articles that are required reading by your class. Reserves also include anatomical models. 

How long can I check out reserve materials?

Reserve materials have an in-house checkout of 2 hours and can be renewed if no one else has inquired about the book. 

Can I take reserved materials out of the library?

No, they are for in-house use only

How do I find the textbook for my class?

Request the textbook at the circulation desk inside of access services on the second floor or search here.

I have a group assignment and my group has certain days they can meet; is there a room for that?

Yes! Group study rooms are available to reserve in advance. Click here to reserve yours anytime during the semester. Group study rooms can also simply be checked out without reservation, but reserving one will guarantee it will be available when you need it. 

I study better in complete silence away from distraction. Is there a room for that?

Yes! We have individual study rooms that can be reserved in advance here, or simply checked out without reservation. 

How many can use the group study rooms?

From 2-8 people can sit comfortably.

How long can I check out a room?

Group study rooms are available for 3 hours. individual study rooms have no limit. 

Where can I print?

You can print at any WEPA kiosk on campus. 

How do I print?

To print, log in with you nicholls email address as your username and your N# as your password. You can pay with your colonel card or a debit card. 

How much does it cost to print?

Black and white: 

With Colonel card: $0.11/page

Without Colonel Card: $0.51/page


With a Colonel Card: $0.51

Without a Colonel Card: $0.91

What is reference chat?

Reference chat is a new service that we are offering at the library! It is an instant messenger system that with the click of a button you can have a librarian at the other end of the computer, answering questions to help you with your research. 

How does it work?

By clicking on the "chat with us" button on the right of this page, you can submit a question and begin a dialog with one of our librarians. 

What are the chat hours?

Currently, chat is available during the fall semester from Monday through Friday 7:30am until 4:30pm

How do I contact you when chat is off?

Feel free to still contact us via email, phone, or in person. You can also click on the chat button when we are offline to submit a reference question. It will be answered by the first available librarian within the next business day.
