Getting Started

Part of the research process is finding the right words to search in our catalog (for books) and databases (for articles).  

• Before you begin your search, think of what terms are associated with your topic.  You can even draw this out if it helps. 
• Think of synonyms for your search terms as well and try them out.  For example, Harry Potter and gender may give you better results than Harry Potter and male characters.   
• Start with fewer words when doing your initial search.  
• By combining your search terms, you will be able to narrow your results to the specific theme you are researching.
