The drop down menu above gives you several options for searching:
Keyword: This will search for the term in all areas of the record. Keep your topic to its key concepts for this search.
Author: Use if you know the author's name. You can enter just the last name of the author, or if you know their full name enter is as last name, first name (Example: Dickens, Charles).
Title: Enter either the full title or just a few keywords from the title.
Subject: This is helpful if you are looking for numerous books on a topic. The lists below provide some suggestions of subject headings that may be useful in your research.
The POWER SEARCH link will give you many options to choose from when searching for a book including keyword, author, title, subject, and periodical title. Use these options together for a more concentrated search. You can even change the drop down boxes to search more than one subject or keyword at a time.
The CALL NUMBER search allows you to search for a book by its call number. Call numbers for history topics can be found in the columns below.
Whether browsing book on the shelf or searching online, it is helpful to know call number ranges (how the books are classified and ordered on the shelves), subject headings (terms assigned to items based on content), and keyword/search terms. The list below includes some call number ranges and subject terms to help start your search.
CALL NUMBERS
Military Science items are classified in Library of Congress by the letter U. A detailed list of subclasses can be found on the Library of Congress website.
U -- Military science (General)
UA -- Armies: Organization, distribution, military situation
UB -- Military administration
UC -- Maintenance and transportation
UD -- Infantry
UE -- Cavalry. Armor (Including horse cavalry, armored cavalry, mechanized cavalry)
UF -- Artillery
UG -- Military engineering
UH -- Other services
Subject Headings
Pre-defined "controlled vocabulary" words assigned to describe the content of each item in a database or catalog. When searching by subject, it is helpful to know the exact terms and phrases to receive the best results. In databases there are often tools, called "thesaurus" or "dictionary" which will help you find subject headings. Here are a few to get you started.

Keywords/Search Terms
Natural language words describing your topic. A good way to start your search. This is often the default search setting and is similar to a Google search. Here are a few to get you started. This type of searching will get a lot of results, some of which may be irrelevant. However, this is the easiest way to search.
