UNIV 101

This guide is for students taking UNIV 101 on campus.

Why should I cite?

  • It allows others to build upon research in order to develop thoughts and ideas as progress is made.
  • To give credit to the source. (Because you would want credit for your work too.)
  • It increases findability in order to reproduce results.
  • So that credit is given in a standard way in a discipline.
  • Not citing is plagiarism.

What is plagiarism?

According to the Code of Student Conduct at Nicholls State University, plagiarism is "the presentation of the works, words, or ideas of others as one’s own, or the use of others’ works, words, and ideas without giving proper acknowledgment, or the inappropriate presentation of someone else’s work as their own" (section 5, page 15-16). If you plagiarize you could:

  • fail the assignment
  • fail the course
  • suspension from the university
