Allen J. Ellender was born in Terrebonne Parish in 1890. He served as a United States Senator for Louisiana from 1937 to 1972, and was President Pro Tempore of the U.S Senate from 1971-1972. His personal papers, comprising nearly 2,000 boxes of material relating to his career in politics and and personal life, are held in the Archives at Nicholls State University.
